Guam - Students in the Guam Community College Simon Sanchez High School Tourism Academy are going to be among the first teenagers on island to learn how to prepare for and respond in disaster situations.
The 25 students are participating in Guam Homeland Security’s Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training on Nov 16 and 23, where they will learn how to deal with both terrorist attacks and natural disasters like the devastating typhoon that struck the Philippines. “We’ve been doing CERT training since 2003, but this is the first time we’ve gone into the high schools for this training,” said Ken Artero, GHS Citizen Corps Program Coordinator. Artero says the two-Saturday course is free and will involve both classroom training and practical training at the GHS facility in Agana Heights.
“This topic is also in our Lodging Management Program curriculum and I am glad this training will augment the lesson,” said Eric Chong, GCC LMP instructor at Sanchez.
Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a Homeland Security Program aimed at teenagers. The Teen CERT course will address disaster preparedness of all types, medical operations, search and rescue operations, and disaster psychology.
